Ben Roethlisberger realizes that stumbling to an 8-8 record last season and missing the playoffs added to the fact that the team lost in the wildcard round the previous season means that many have been led to believe that the NFL organization that epitomizes consistent success may be in a bit of a downward slide. And that’s not even taking into account the losses of Mike Wallace and James Harrison this offseason and the overall aging of the roster, as the Steelers reportedly rank in the NFL’s top 10 teams in average roster age. But that doesn’t mean that the veteran Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback necessarily chooses to agree with that characterization of the team. Speaking with Vinnie and Cook at Pittsburgh’s 93.7 the Fan, Big Ben discussed the loss of Wallace and Harrison, the perceived lack of leadership on the team last season, the pressure to get back in the playoffs and the lowered expectations the team seemingly has been ascribed by outsiders and how the franchise is in for a few tough years. “Good. Go ahead. I guess it depends on who you ask and that is fine. I’m with people saying that we’re going to be terrible and, ‘Let’s overlook them,’ because that means our opponents are doing the same thing. I like that,” finishing up with, “I like being the hunter. It’s kind of a fun place to be. I’m OK with that.” The hunter, eh? While it is an essentially meaningless observation as years has passed since Big Ben’s troublesome younger days, the first thing that came to mind when I read “I like being the hunter,” is those very same troublesome younger days, as lazily summarized via a link to Wikipedia and illustrated by the song “The Hunter” as performed by Danzig. You see, as far as finding relevant information to support an observation, I’m not much of a hunter. Nor would I have much interest in being one, either.
