Bengals Post:
Cincinnati Bengals kicker Mike Nugent was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month on Thursday. The former Buckeye connected on all eight of his field goal attempts over the first three games—including two kicks from beyond 50 yards.
After parting ways with Shayne Graham, the Bengals signed Nugent and Dave Rayner to compete for the starting job at kicker. He missed the beginning of training camp due to a groin injury, but Nugent bounced back and won the job after impressing coaches with the strength of his foot against the Bills and Colts. It’s still early in the season, but it appears Cincinnati made the right choice by selecting Nugent over Rayner.
Along with this week’s award, Nugent was honored with AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for Week 2 after connecting on all five of his field goal attempts against the Ravens—the Bengals only points scored in the game.
