As excited as we all were for the start of the season, that’s how down we now all feel after the Giants lost 24-17 to the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday night.
The Giants looked flat from the beginning, and some missed plays and injuries didn’t help either.
But throughout the game, it was the Cowboys’ third-down conversions that proved to be the difference.
With all the penalties Dallas took, they were constantly facing a third and long situation. Tony Romo surprisingly was able to pick apart the Giants battered secondary and convert first downs.
It’s painful for a defense to remain on the field after giving up third-down conversion after third-conversion. As a result, the potential for a big play occurs, and Dallas had its share in the game.
This is a difficult situation to be in, because the defense in practice can look great stopping third-down plays against the practice squad. However, when the other team lines up, it’s a completely different look.
Maybe the coverage in the secondary was too soft or maybe the players who were on the field just weren’t ready, but either way something must be done.
Of course, no one is hitting the panic button after losing one game. Keep in the mind the Giants lost Week 1 last year to Rex Grossman and the Washington Redskins before eventually winning the Super Bowl.
You expect the team to split each year with the Cowboys, so the Giants merely got their loss out of the way early.
However, defensive lapses on third down spell doom for any team. If the corrections are made, Big Blue will be back on track in time for the Buccaneers.
