It's been six years since Bill Cowher last strolled the sidelines as an NFL head coach, spitting his patented venom.

Though some consider him retired, "The Chin" intimated otherwise.

"It would be a challenge," Cowher told Newsday's Neil Best. "But I think that's probably why I would get back into it, because of the challenge."

Asked point blank if he plans to eventually coach again, Cowher replied, "Yeah."

The last time we saw the 55-year-old was in 2006, when he capped off his 15th season as the Steelers head man, one year removed from winning Super Bowl XL. Since then, he's been a prominent fixture on CBS' NFL coverage, but the game has morphed in that time frame.

Cowher, however, believes the lapse wouldn't preclude him from succeeding if when he does return.

"I did it for 27 years,'' he said. "You don't just forget things overnight. One thing about this job is it's been really good because it allows me to study the game and do features on the game . . . It's not like I'm out of it. I know how the game is changing.''

Like snow in the winter, Cowher's name predictably pops up around this time each year. Several teams reshuffling their coaching hierarchy already have been told "thanks, but no thanks" by Cowher, but one day -- maybe as soon as next year -- he's going to take them up on their offer.
