Bill Parcells has mentored a whole host of big names in the NFL coaching world, none bigger than Bill Belichick. However, there are many who are still growing and maybe one day, have the same status of the hooded one. One up and coming name is Todd Bowles, the new defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals. When Bruce Arians took the Arizona head coach position, the Cardinals wanted to retain incumbent DC Ray Horton, but Arians already had Bowles tabbed as his coach on the defensive side of the ball. Arians stuck to his guns and didn’t give in to the Cardinals; they gave in to him. Bowles now gets to run the show, but his background has a pedigree only a select group can claim, learning from Parcells, a gold seal that would open many doors. Bowles shed some light on what he gleamed from Parcells: “Bill actually taught me the game when I first came into the league as a professional coach,” Bowles said, via Bob McManaman of azcentral.com. “He pretty much taught me not to just learn DB play, but learn what everybody does and to learn the core pieces of the 3-4 defense and why they work, how they work and what to install first and what to get first.” Bowles added Parcells taught him how to evaluate players: “To learn a player you’ve got to find out what makes him tick, what motivates him, what he’s playing for,” Bowles said. “What kind of coaching can he take? What kind of teaching can he take? What does he respond to and doesn’t respond to? How best can you get that guy to play?” var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
