The Falcons and LB Lofa Tatupu Agreed to Terms on Sat. March 10

The Falcons have agreed to terms with 3-time Pro Bowl and 1-time All-Pro Seattle Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu.  Tatupu, who did not play during 2011 due to injury, worked out for the Falcons on Friday, March.9 and was inked to a deal on the 10th.

The signing of Tatupu will likely spell an end for free agent linebacker Curtis Lofton, who has been starting at middle linebacker for Atlanta since he was drafted in the second round in 2008.  Speculation was that Lofton was going to be too pricey for the Falcons to keep. This may have just sealed that fate.

The starting middle linebacker position will now probably be a contest between Tatupu and second year player Akeem Dent.  The two could probably be used in tandem, with Tatupu being considered the stronger defender against the pass, having 10 career interceptions.

New Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is no doubt familiar with Tatupu and his abilities, as he coached against him in the NFC West as head coach of the San Fransisco 49ers.

Tatupu has a history of concussions and other injuries, and his last full season with Seattle (2010) he amassed the fewest tackles of his career, and had to have offseason surgery on both knees. In his first few seasons he recorded over 100 tackles per season,  and was a Pro Bowl selecction from 2005-2007

Details of the agreement between the Falcons and Tatupu have not yet been disclosed
