IRVING, Texas -- After spending a year out of football, veteran guard Brian Waters says he's ready to help the Cowboys in Sunday's game against the Chiefs. "It's my hope, but that's Coach Jason Garrett's call," Waters said. "All I can say is I'm in better shape than I was last week, that's for sure. I feel a lot better about today's practice than I did last week." Waters signed with the Cowboys last week but did not play in the season opener against the Giants. Waters said he stayed in shape while not going through a training camp, but said being in football shape is a different matter. "You can feel how you want to, but you have to wait til Sunday," Waters said. "You really have to get out there and get those live bullets before you'll really be able to tell if you're ready or not." A former standout at North Texas, Waters would likely supplant Mackenzy Bernadeau at right guard. He said he isn't concerned with whether he starts Sunday or plays a limited number of snaps. And if he plays Sunday, it will be against the team he spent 11 seasons with. Waters played with the Chiefs from 2000-10 and said he's gotten calls from former Kansas City teammates congratulating him on signing with the Cowboys. However, going against his old team doesn't hold any special meaning to Waters at this point. "I want to play football, it doesn't matter what team it is," Waters said. "To me, mentally, it's about trying to get out on the football field as much as possible. It doesn't matter that it's Kansas City." Follow Keith Whitmire on Twitter: @Keith_Whitmire
