They say the shortest path to the unemployment line is poor play. In Tony Carter’s case, however, it may be his warped sense of “humor.”

On Monday night, the Broncos cornerback was at a local movie theater and tweeted a reference to the July shooting in Aurora, Colo. that left 12 dead and 58 injured.

“At a late night movie in Denver yall pray for me!” Carter tweeted, via KDVR-TV.

Shortly after, he deleted the tasteless tweet and followed it up with “No Disrespect!!!” That tweet was also deleted.

On Tuesday morning, Carter issued an apology for what he deemed an “insensitive and inappropriate comment.”

I am truly sorry for the insensitive and inappropriate comment I made last night. It will never happen again.

Carter, whose bounced around the league since going undrafted in 2009, has appeared in all five games for the Broncos this season as the dime back.

Though he’s unlikely to lose his job, Carter, 26, is old enough to know the recent tragedy still resonates deeply in the Denver community. Heck, he’s reminded of it every time he puts on his helmet, so there’s really no excuse to make such a boneheaded musing.
