When word of Matt Prater's pending four-game suspension came down, Denver rookie kicker Mitch Ewald said, "There's an opening there. Is it for me? Who knows? It might be, it might be for somebody else." The rookie from Indiana saw Tuesday that he wasn't in the Broncos' plans. They released him after acquiring first-year kicker Brandon McManus from the New York Giants for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2015. Ewald was unimpressive at Broncos camp, never quite finding a rhythm at altitude despite working alongside Prater, whom he studied while in college. Ewald was wide left on a 36-yard field goal try with 4:36 left that would have given Denver a 10-point lead over Houston on Saturday night. That miss opened the door for the Texans' TD drive and 2-point conversion that won it 18-17 in the final minute. "I just rushed myself," said Ewald, who was hoping to get all the work in Denver's preseason finale at Dallas on Thursday night. Inst...

Denver Broncos: Was Matt Prater’s suspension too much?

Last season, Matt Prater established himself as the best kicker in the league. He missed only one field goal, would kick them through easily from more than 50 yards away, and even broke a 43 year old record when he kicked in a 64 yard field goal. But this year, he will have to wait to help out the Broncos, since he will be suspended for the first four games of the season. Prater...

NFL’s suspension of Matt Prater ludicrous due to interconnected nature of football and beer

Without beer, there could be no football. The NFL makes a ton of money through beer advertising, but that’s not the only reason it’s needed. The professional football league has created a culture that cannot function without the alcoholic beverage, which allows the brutality on the field to continue. Really, how can you watch a football game without beer? That’s un-American...

With an offense that may make the team’s kicker as underutilized as the Maytag repairman, the Giants nevertheless need to have at least one kicker on the roster. Broncos probably will look for a place-kicker for early season

There's a decent chance the Broncos' season-opening place-kicker is not yet on their roster.
