Starting quarterback Brandon Weeden wont play in the Browns preseason finale Thursday night against the Chicago Bears, coach Pat Shurmur said this afternoon during his post-practice news conference. Colt McCoy will start, and fellow quarterbacks Seneca Wallace and Thaddeus Lewis also will play, Shurmur said.
The competition between McCoy and Wallace for the No. 2 quarterback job is still up in the air, Shurmur said.
I think as theyre out there playing, were gathering information about whether theyre gonna be a member of the 53[-man roster], he said.
The preseason finale could have served as one final tune-up for Weeden. Shurmur, however, is confident Weeden is ready for the Sept. 9 regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
I think hes very prepared, Shurmur said. I think hes had an outstanding camp. I thought he had an outstanding offseason and really hes kind of improved every day. So for a guy thats going through this for the first time as a pro, I think hes very ready.

Did the Browns give up on Colt McCoy too soon?
Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur made a bold decision early in the preseason when he named rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden the starter before taking a single snap in an NFL game. After three preseason starts, Weeden has looked like a rookie; inexperienced and unable to move the offense consistently while last year’s starter, Colt [...]
Cancel the Season: Brandon Weeden to sit out Browns’ last practice game
On one hand, no one will ever go broke questioning the legitimacy and competence of the Holmgren/Shurmur regime. It’s easy enough to see pretty much any decision they make as resulting primarily from some combination of arrogance and fear, including the one to sit Brandon Weeden in tonight’s final preseason tuneup. Of course they don’t want anyone to get hurt tonight, but worse...
Shurmur: Brandon Weeden is “Very Ready”
I think [Brandon Weeden] is very prepared. I think he’s had an outstanding camp. I thought he had an outstanding offseason. Really he’s kind of improved every day. For a guy that’s going through this for the first time as a pro, I think he’s very ready.

Browns' Weeden working on ball security
Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden knows he needs to get a grip.
Weeden has already fumbled three times during the exhibition season, losing the ball twice and costing Cleveland points with his turnovers. In Friday's 27-10 loss to Philadelphia, Weeden fumbled twice in the first quarter. The first one wasn't his fault as his protection broke down on a botched screen...
Weeden sitting is the safe play, I guess
Pat Shurmur announced today that Brandon Weeden was going to sit out the fourth pre-season game this week. It has created debate all over sports talk radio and twitter as people try to figure out what their stance is on the topic. On the one hand, Brandon Weeden and the starting offense might want to have something in their memories that’s a bit more positive than what they did...

Browns Q.B. Colt McCoy Gets Start Against Bears Weeden Won’t Play
Browns quarterback Cot McCoy will start Thursday night when the Browns take on the Chicago Bears, Brandon Weeden will not play. Just recently Pat Shurmur said he has a lot of confidence in McCoy, you just have to wonder if the Cleveland Browns have wondered if they named Brandon Weeden the Browns starting quarterback prematurely. McCoy has had better than Weeden throughout the preseason...
Browns News: Trent Richardson Still Not At Practice; Weeden to Sit Out Game
The twitter brigade in Berea kept us informed today that rookie RB Trent Richardson was not on the practice field again, and that QB Brandon Weeden isn’t expected to play at all on Thursday.
Still no Trent Richardson for #Browns. Expected him on field by this point this week. I’m sure we’ll get the usual “he’s making progress.”

Browns Q.B. Brandon Weeden Must Be More Ready Than Eli Manning, Manning’s Playing Tonight
Browns coach Pat Shurmur has been reiterating for the past couple days, just how ready his 28-year-old rookie Q.B. Brandon Weeden is. I find it a bit unusual that Weeden himself has stated he needs more time to get comfortable with the speed of the game in the NFL. The other thing I find a bit unusual is the fact a guy like Eli Manning is playing for the New York Giants tonight in...
Colt McCoy to start for Browns on Thursday
Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur has announced that rookie Brandon Weeden will sit on Thursday, giving the nod for the final preseason game to Colt McCoy.
The Browns announced weeks ago that Weeden was the starter, and typically starting quarterbacks sit out the final preseason game. But Weeden isn’t your typical starter. He’s struggled the past two preseason games and...
What We’re Watching: Bears at Browns
No Brandon Weeden and potentially no fans inside of the stadium despite being forced to pay regular season prices, but that won’t stop us from analyzing the game from the comfort of our own homes. The home stretch before the start of the regular season, the Browns will be forced to use tonight’s contest to widdle their roster from 75 to 53 by the close of business tomorrow. You...
Why Brandon Weeden will be the best rookie quarterback in 2012
I have evaluated all the quarterback situations around the league and I have made my final conclusion. That is that, Brandon Weeden will perform better than any rookie quarterback in the NFL Draft. I know everyone is wondering about Robert Griffin III or Andrew Luck, but I think Weeden can be the best.
Weeden is far more mature then all of these quarterbacks, he understands the...
Browns Coach Shurmur P.C.Proud Of McCoy Still not naming him Backup Q.B.
Browns coach Pat Shurmur held a press conference after Sunday practice, he talked about cutting receiver Carlton Mitchell and how proud he was about how Colt McCoy is handling the Q.B. quarterback situation. He still refuses to name McCoy as the Browns back up. When Shurmur was asked if the Browns could continue to hold on to all 4 quarterbacks Shurmur refused to answer the questions...
3 Million And One Reasons The Cleveland Browns Need To Cut Seneca Wallace
Cleveland Browns backup quarterback Seneca Wallace continues to promote his Colt McCoy hate campaign publicly. Wallace took to the airways to once again say he won’t be Colt McCoy’s mentor. The Cleveland Fans should be happy about that fact. McCoy at least won some games last season that is more than we can say about Seneca Wallace.
When the Browns picked Weeden in the draft...
Browns Joe Thomas & Pat Shurmur See strength Up front For Weeden’s Sake Lets Hope They Start Showing The Rest Of Us
Both Joe Thomas and head coach Pat Shurmur are insisting the Cleveland Browns offensive line is going to be good this season. They both see this as being the teams strength coming into the season. I wonder what they are seeing that the rest of us missed last Friday night? The Eagles were able to walk through the holes in the O-line to get to Brandon Weeden, forcing him to fumble...
