Tuesday, July 31, 2007Mary Kay CabotPlain Dealer Reporter Browns quarterback Charlie Frye discovered his own version of The Secret while training with Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in Arizona last month. Working out at a gym called Make Plays, Frye learned from the mobile McNabb the fine art of when to run out of the pocket and when to stay put. "I picked up some different ideas from him as far as his scrambling abilities and why he doesn't do it anymore," said Frye. And why is that? "It's his secret," said Frye. "But I think you guys will be able to tell during the first couple games of the season what the secret is." What's more, Frye said he won't need to scramble as much this season because of the overhauled offensive line. "With Eric Steinbach and Hank Fraley and Ryan Tucker, I think we have a great line, so I think they're going to give me a lot of time this year," said Frye. Frye said he spent a few weeks working out with McNabb and some of his receivers from Philadelphia. "Donovan has been through the football wars, and he's been to the Super Bowl and Pro Bowls," said Frye. "Just to see how he interacts with his players and other little stuff like that really helped. He's a great guy, and I think I picked up a lot in those couple of weeks." Frye said he chose Make Plays over other fancier gyms in Phoenix that are in vogue for NFL players.

  • McNabb's secret is that he doesn't want to be labeled as a black "running" quarterback. Or at least that's what he's said here many times in the Philly newspapers. I don't think Channing has to worry about that. It's probably the art of dumping a pass off to your runningback out of the backfield.
