Much of the yardage and big plays the Buccaneers were giving up were coming from the fact that stunts, instead of straight ahead rushes, were being called for their defensive line. However, something changed and that change was evident on Sunday against the Buffalo Bills.  In last week’s game against the Carolina Panthers, TheBayCave.com broke down Tampa Bay’s defensive plays. Out of 63 of Carolina’s offensive plays, the Bucs ran 15 defensive line stunts in which Carolina averaged 13.1 yards per play. In the other 48 plays for the Panthers’ offense, Carolina just averaged 4.6 yards per play. That was not the case on Sunday. In fact, the Bucs only ran three stunts against Buffalo. In those three plays, Buffalo averaged just over 15 yards per play. That average includes a 33-yard catch and run by Bills’ receiver Stevie Johnson where his route led him right to a hole in Tampa Bay’s zone defense. Did defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan give up on the stunts? Did head coach Greg Schiano have anything to do with overseeing the defensive playcalling? We may never truly know the answer to those questions but one thing is clear. The Buccaneers’ front four is much better when they are not running stunts and that is something defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has been trying to tell the coaching staff. Their seven sacks from Week 14 prove that, even if it was against the Bills.
