FOXBORO, MA - SEPTEMBER 26: Coach Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots (R) shakes hands with coach Chan Gailey of the Buffalo Bills after the game at Gillette Stadium on September 26, 2010 in Foxboro, Massachusetts. The Patriots won 38-30. (Photo by Jim Rogash/Getty Images)

Before making his decision to stay out west for the two-game road trip, Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey consulted with someone who has been there, and done that. That person is this week's opposing head coach, Jim Harbaugh.

“San Francisco’s done it the last couple of years,” Gailey said. ”I talked with Harbaugh, and he thought there were some real positives in not making your team fly back and forth, putting them on a plane for five or six hours, both ways, and adjusting to the time change twice during the course of a year.  So that was the decision."

It was a decision that Gailey, and Harbaugh, hopes will work out in favor of the Bills when they play the second game in Arizona against the 4-1 Cardinals.

“I certainly hope it works out for them on the second leg,” Harbaugh said chuckling. ”I think one thing that’s really important is that your team enjoys each other’s company. The team has to enjoy being around each other. It’s like a second training camp in a way. You’re in a hotel, practicing and you’re on the road and there’s more time to spend with each other. So there’s a benefit there if your team likes being around each other.”

While Harbaugh has experience with this type of road trip, Gailey does not.

"I’ve never done this, to be honest with you," Gailey said, "but it made a little bit of sense to me, to not put your players through that.  It’s better for the players, and that’s why you’re doing it.”

The Bills play in San Francisco Sunday and then travel to Arizona to play the Cardinals the following Sunday.
