Via It's Always Sunny In Detroit:

With hundreds of people gathered in Times Square along with Michelle Beadle and Colin Cowherd of ESPN2′s SportsNation. Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson and Panthers quarterback Cam Newton stood on a miniature football field waiting for the announcement.

Cam Newton said that his life would change because he’d “walk by GameStop and see his beautiful face”.  Johnson was a bit more subdued as Beadle and Cowherd tried their absolute best to hype it up more than I ever imagined.

Time will only tell if Johnson falls victim to the 'Madden Curse', the phenomenon in which past athletes seem to fall victim to bad luck or injury during the season in which they appeared on the cover of the popular game. The curse began with Garrison Hearst in '99 and is still very much alive, as last year's cover boy, Peyton Hillis, suffered through a tumultuous 2011 season, one year after setting career highs during the 2010 campaign.

Newton seemed bummed. Johnson didn’t seem to care either way. Hopefully for Lions fans, the jinx stops in 2012.

  • the curse will get you ether a bad year for him or a injury will sideline him lions 3-13 this year
  • i really dont give a rat's a$$ about the Detroit Lions and their season but i'd feel really bad for Calvin Johnson if he got hurt. he's a good player and i like him, i just hope the Madden Curse doesn't hit him. and @JPuzzleWhiz, you've never played madden have you. what does it matter if people buy these things and give Madden money, are you jealous or something? we buy the game because we like it and it's fun, i'm sorry for enjoying something.
  • I'm a Lions fan... but let's remember that Calvin only had 1 injury free season. Last Season... So him getting injured wouldn't suprize me. There is no curse. It's called a player can only catch people off guard for so long before they catch on. That and tough luck. Lions WILL make the playoffs again this year. If not go farther. Go Lions!
  • Madden Curse is a live and well and this is not what the up and coming Lions needed. Without Calvin due to injury the Lions will be picking early in the draft of 2013. Let's just hope he can be the one to break the curse.

Well Detroit Lions, you had a good run. Your team was solid last season and you could have been a legitimate contender this time around. Unfortunately, the American people hate you.
