During his time in Oakland, Nnamdi Asomugha was considered a top 5 cover corner. Give him a man to man assignment and he would lock down opposing receivers regularly. However, everything changed once he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. Once a feared and respected cornerback, he never adjusted to the zone concepts covering areas not trailing receivers. He was repeatedly torched by pass catchers and after two year in the Liberty City, he was sent packing. The luster was stripped off and he now needs to prove to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio he can still play. The 49ers play a lot of zone, but do play some man underneath with safeties in a zone. He’ll have to prove he can play both and according to Matt Miaocca of CSN Bay Area, there is no free lunch as he will have to earn a roster spot. Miaocca writes: ‘A 10-year veteran, Asomugha struggled mightily with the Philadelphia Eagles the past two seasons upon signing a big-money deal. After getting released, the 49ers signed him to a one-year, $1.325 million contract with no guaranteed money. He has to make the team to get paid. "It remains to be seen how well he can cover," Fangio said.
