The Chicago Bears announced that they hired Marc Trestman to be their new head coach. The Bears were also looking at Bruce Arians and Darrell Bevell, but informed the two other candidates that they were going to hire Trestman. Marc will leave his current position as the head coach for the Canadian Football League’s Alouettes. He was the coach for the Alouettes since 2008. Under his leadership the Alouettes had a 64-34 record. The Alouettes won the Grey Cup Championship in 2009 and 2010, plus with his success he won CFL Coach of the Year in 2009. Trestman does have NFL experience. In the NFL he has held the title of offensive coordinator with the San Francisco 49ers as well as the Oakland Raiders. Former 49er great Steve Young worked with Trestman commented about Marc during an interview yesterday. Young said, “What he is is a phenomenal offensive mind. He’s a great game-day playcaller. I had Mike Holmgren, I had Mike Shanahan and Marc Trestman, and I would put Marc right in there. He’s learned and grown, and I stay in touch with him.” In other NFL coaching news the San Diego Chargers hire Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy to be their head coach. Mike McCoy replaces Norv Turner, who was let go after this season. The Chargers had a record of 7-9 which caused them to miss the playoff for the third time in row. Tom Telesco, who recently got hired by the Chargers as their general manager was really impressed with McCoy. Telesco raved about McCoy and told reporters his reasons on why they hired him. ”Once he came in and once we saw how good he was, we just felt we had to have him now. We had to get it done or we’d lose him. He was polished, prepared, had great questions, which I think is big, too, that he had a lot of questions for us. It’s a partnership between the GM and the head coach, through and through. We spend more time with each other during the season than we do with our own family so it’s got to be a tight relationship. When he came in, after a little bit of time you could tell he was the right guy for us. We went after him hard.”
