Faced with a dearth of bodies at offensive guard, the Cleveland Browns made a deal today with the Seattle Seahawks to acquire offensive lineman John Moffitt in exchange for defensive lineman Brian Sanford. Moffitt, a third-year player out of Wisconsin, has appeared in 17 games over the last two seasons for the Seahawks, starting 15 of those games. He was selected in the third round (75th overall pick) of the 2011 NFL Draft by Seattle. In spite of his experience, Moffitt has been criticized for a lack of quickness that make him a liability in pass protection. With both Jason Pinkston and Shawn Lauvao sidelined with injuries, Moffitt figures to get a shot at the starting right guard position for the last two preseason games and possibly the beginning of the regular season. That spot is currently held by rookie Garrett Gilkey. Sanford was signed by the Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Since then he has appeared in just six games, spending much of his time on the practice squad. However, he has had a solid and fiery training camp, getting himself involved in a number of scraps during drills. Sanford looked like he could have been earning himself a roster spot, but with seven or more other defensive linemen in front of him, the Browns figured it was worth more to trade him and add more depth on the interior of the offensive line.
