The Finatics attended a live conference with Coach Philbin on Monday at training camp in Davie, Florida. Philbin answered live questions from Miami season ticket holders in person, and on teleconference. Here is are the highlights of what he had to say. Coach Philbin said that the Dolphins ran 980 plays last year during the 2012 season.  He reviewed every one of them prior to minicamp.  He said that the biggest areas that need focus are: 1) Eliminating the explosive pass plays against the defense 2) Take the ball away more on defense 3) More explosive plays on offense 4) Stop the giveaways on offense.  Dolphins were -10 in giveaways vs. takeaways last year. On the defense, Philbin was impressed with the progress of Reshard Jones and Chris Clemons, and thought that they would be part of eliminating the explosive passes against the defense.  Additionally he sees an improvement in the secondary over last season.  He also discussed Deion Jordan, and how he would contribute on defense.  There are definitely some ideas about using him as playing more than just secondary.  Philbin discussed possibly using him as a pass rusher, to possibly complement Cameron Wake.  His versatility was the main reason why they made the move for him when they did in the draft. On offense, his was very impressed with the progress of Lamar Miller during the offseason. He was also confident in Miller and Daniel Thomas as the team’s go to running backs. On the offense line, Coach Philbin said that without Jake Long, it’s hard to figure out where they stand. Coach likes the transition of Jonathan Martin to left tackle, with Tyson Clabo to left tackle. He also thought that Mike Pouncey had a good year at center, and Richie Incognito was solid at guard. He was expecting to be improved on the offensive line over 2012, but coach said he is going to need every one of the 41 days in training camp to get them ready for the season. From the receiver standpoint, Philbin said that there is still progress to be seen. He commented that it will take time for Tannehill to learn his new targets, but especially learn his second and third target. Coach said that it’s really important to get off to a good start in the season. But it will not come easy. 2 road games will start the season, and 5 of the first 8 games are against 2012 playoff teams.
