While much will be written about the 49ers young quarterback Colin Kaepernick, backup quarterback Alex Smith is the lone man out in San Francisco. And just think, it was only last year that Smith had them within a few minutes of going to the Super Bowl himself. Alas, it is time for Smith to explore other options.While Smith has had a less than stellar run in San Francisco, last year  - and this year - proved that he can indeed be relied on as top-tier starter. Since the 2009 season, Smith has increased his touchdown to interception ratio, and was on track for a career year this season before an injury allowed Kaepernick to take over as starter.While the writing may be on the while as far as how much Kaepernick seems to be entrenched as the starter, Smith's 2013 salary of $8.5 million for a backup will be a hard pill to swallow for the 49ers brass with Kaepernick eligible for an extension this off-season. And Smith still has two years left on his contract. So what do the 49ers do?The Chiefs, thanks to their own futility, own the first pick in the draft. Surely they aren't going to trade a #1 pick for a 28 year old quarterback And I'm not crazy enough to think the Niners trade him for a first round pick in the first place. They'd love to, no doubt, I just don't think anyone would take the bait. OK, the Raiders would because they're the Raiders. Considering the Chiefs allowed 40 sacks (22nd) and were 29th in sacks from the defense last year, I see them going after some offensive or defensive line help.I've seen a few mock drafts (here and here) that believe West Virginia's Geno Smith will go to the Chiefs, mainly because of new coach Andy Reid looking for a new quarterback. Well, I would be too if I were Reid, but I believe his quarterback of the future, at least short term, is in San Francisco. Smith is a mobile quarterback, and would be adept at running Reid's west coast offensive scheme.There's also someone else that agrees with me. Coupled with the fact that Jamaal Charles just rushed for 1500 yards and still has a few good years in him, it makes no sense to bring in a rookie quarterback and let Charles waste away while a rookie learns the system.With the Niners on the hook for a nice sum of money, I wouldn't be surprised to see them let him walk for maybe a combination of 2nd or 3rd round picks, or maybe a first rounder for next year or 2015.
