IRVING, Texas -- Dallas Cowboys lineman Josh Brent on Sunday morning was freed on bond and released from jail pending his September trial on intoxication manslaughter charges resulting from being the driver in a one-car crash that killed his teammate, Jerry Brown. It is not clear whether Brent will also appear before a judge on July 19, when prosecutors were originally scheduled to argue that he failed a second drug test for marijuana. A recent alleged failure -- a clear violation of the court's order resulted in his jailing in Dallas County. On December 8, 2012, the eve of the Cowboys' departure for a road game, Brent who'd moved into a starting role along the Dallas defensive line -- was intoxicated when he flipped his 2007 Mercedes Benz with teammate Jerry Brown inside. Brown died at the scene. The arrest report showed Brent's blood-alcohol level to be 0.189, more than twice the legal limit. While the Cowboys have yet to official cut ties with the player, the district attorney's office has been aggressive in the case. "Addictions are very hard to overcome, and we see this on a daily basis," DA Craig Watkins recently told Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan. "Obviously, Josh Brent has an issue with alcohol, and you just can't one day decide that you're going to stop using it. So I think he's struggling with that. So I'm not surprised with the outcome of what's going on with this case; I just hope that at the end of it, justice will be served for Mr. Brent and the citizens of Dallas County."
