IRVING The Philadelphia Eagles cut defensive end Jason Babin on Tuesday, leaving the two-time Pro Bowler available to be claimed by another franchise. The Jacksonville Jaguars won the claim on Wednesday, according to multiple reports. When the news of Babin's release began circulating, fans across the league wondered if their favorite team would land the former first-round pick. The Dallas Cowboys were not one of the teams to enter a claim and executive vice president Stephen Jones explained the organization's line of thinking Wednesday morning. "Well, he's more of a 4-3 (defensive) fit," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan KRLD-FM. "Anyone can always use a pass rusher, don't get me wrong, but our (salary) cap situation is such that we do have to watch it. He's got 1.7 million left to be paid on his salary. And fortunately, we haven't been hit there with injuries. DeMarcus (Ware's) healthy, (Anthony) Spencer's healthy. We have Victor Butler who certainly does a good job, and don't know that that's necessarily the best place for us to be spending what resources we have right now." Babin, 32, finished with a career-high 18 sacks last season and 12.5 in 2010. But like the Eagles' play this season, Babin struggled, despite leading the team with 5.5 sacks. Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement that they parted with Babin to give more playing time to some of the team's younger defensive linemen. According to several reports, the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins were the only other teams to place claims on Babin. The Jaguars had the second overall waiver spot behind only the Kansas City Chiefs.
