Per Profootballtalk.com
A league source tells us that Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett will earn $3.5 million to $4 million per year as part of a four-year contract to stay with the team.
That's clearly the richest deal for any NFL assistant coach, and substantially more than many head coaches.
In Dallas, the problem is that Garrett could now be making more money than Phillips, who reportedly gets only $3 million per year.
Then again, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might give Wade a raise for 2008 in order to allow the head coach to save face. But that could only increase the chance that Phillips will get fired after the coming season. Really, why pay two head coaches when a team only needs one?
Of course, Jones' other option is to fire Phillips right now. But why pay him $3 million not to work in 2008 when Wade can essentially serve as head coach-defense while Garrett serves as head coach-offense?
Jerry Jones has officially loaded the pistol and pointed it at his foot.
Get ready for an avalanche of rumors and speculations regarding Wade Phillips future which will make for a very interesting work environment. With the loss of top front office executive Ireland and the departure of Sparano to Miami (not to mention those he will undoubtedly pick to take with him) and with the highs paid assistant in the league and overbearing owner breathing down his neck, how will Phillips react to this?
More so, how will a diva like Terrell Owens react.?
After all, Wade Phillips is a defense guy and now with Garrett being the head honcho of the offense, look for a lot of the respect T.O. claimed to have for Phillips go in the toilet along with the respect for Mariucci, Reid, Parcells, McNabb, Garcia, Bledsoe, Ray Lewis, etc.
Oh, by the way, Owens tearfully defended Romo, but has Romo made any appearances showing his gratitude. T.O. did ruin himself publicly with the antics. You don't believe Mr. Sensitivity T.O. won't make a big deal out of it?
Let's go back to a few years ago when T.O. caught his 100 TD and the Eagles didn't celebrate it
shall we...Owens had harsh things to say about the Eagles for not publicly recognizing his 100th career touchdown catch Oct. 23 at home against the Chargers.
Here's a excerpt from ESPN.com of what T.O. had to say about the (non)celebration:
"That right there just shows you the type of class and integrity that they claim not to be," said Owens, who became the sixth receiver in NFL history to reach the milestone. "They claim to be first class and the best organization. It's an embarrassment. It just shows a lack of class they have. My publicist talked to the head PR guy, and they made an excuse they didn't recognize that was coming up. But that was a blatant lie. Had it been somebody else, they probably would have popped fireworks around the stadium."
Garrett, Phillips, Romo, T.O., Jones vs. Parcells...
get your popcorn ready next year shall be interesting
