While NFL players are dropping like flies with season ending injuries barely a few days into training camp, Cowboys safety Barry Church had a wholly unique, and truly bizarre, reason for missing Dallas’ Monday practice. Church had suffered what is undoubtedly the first Jolly Rancher related injury in NFL history. The 4th year player loves the fruit flavored hard candy, and was enjoying a cherry piece about a week before Cowboys training camp was set to begin. Turned out Church had chipped a tooth, which, while somewhat painful, was tolerable, until this past Monday morning, when his dental pain became unbearable. A call to the dentist, one emergency root canal later, and Church was back at practice Tuesday. All it cost the Cowboys defender was a missed walk through and practice Monday, and a few well deserved “zingers” from coaches and teammates. Barry church missed practice because of a cherry jolly rancher .. Seriously .. Chipped tooth and needed root canal …that's a first — Nick Eatman (@nickeatman) July 30, 2013 Church has learned his lesson, vowing to satisfy his sweet tooth with softer candies, and put the Jolly Ranchers on hold, at least until the season’s over… “I have to stick to the soft stuff – Starburst, Skittles, stuff like that,” he said. Jolly Ranchers? Not for a while. Not before the season’s over, anyway. I’m sure 4 out of 5 dentists would agree.
