The Dallas Cowboys have signed running back Lance Dunbar to the 53-man roster in hopes of adding some speed and explosiveness particularly to their special teams.

Dunbar comes into the rotation behind running backs DeMarco Murray, Felix Jones and Phillip Tanner.

Jones, who has been used primarily on kickoffs, has failed to produce any spark in the return game, even coughing up the opening kick against Seattle, a game Dallas would go on to lose convincingly.

To make room for Dunbar Dallas has returned wide receiver Ramon Radway to the practice squad in his place.

Radway, who has been with the club for the last two training camps, spent 2011 on injured reserve after breaking his leg.

As for Dunbar, he has been close to the Cowboys' 53-man roster before, almost avoiding the late cuts in August, only to be waived a couple days later and put on the practice squad.

A few days after that Dunbar made the trip with the team to New York, an iddication that he would be active and possibly play against the Giants. The club decided to change its mind, and he has been on the practice squad ever since.

Dunbar, a rookie free agent out of North Texas, has shown some flashes during off-season OTAs and minicamps until a hamstring injury slowed his development. He did however return for the final two preseason games including the finale against Miami where he rushed for 105 yards including a 53-yard touchdown.

Dallas currently has the 30th ranked rushing attack in the league average 67.8 yards per game. The Cowboys are in need of some sort of spark in that department, as well as in the return game, where Felix Jones does not appear to be getting it done.

The Cowboys are hoping Dunbar can be that spark.
