Holloman’s interception for TD The Dallas Cowboys opened their 2013 preseason campaign with a 24-20 victory over the Miami Dolphins thanks to strong showings by their rushing attack and new look defense. Wait the Cowboys won a game running the ball and playing defense? Now, that didn’t happen all of last season. Here is what the Cowboys can take from the game: Getting off to a good start is a huge positive as the ‘Boys only played four of their starters. Bill Callahan seemed to strike more of a balance in his play-calling with 21 passing attempts and 34 rushing attempts. Also, Monte Kiffin’s new look defense created three turnovers and four sacks. Jason Garrett and the coaching staff found some answers for their backup positions especially at running back. Philip Tanner rushed for 65 yards on 10 attempts, scoring a TD. One of his run’s in the game was surely a man’s run, breaking a tackle, and spinning out of another two. He looked like a man who wants that No. 2 job. Lance Dunbar looked impressive in the game’s opening drive, and rookie Joseph Randle also showed flashes of what he can do. The Cowboys look like they will have a tough decision to make at the position in the next month. What a game for George Selvie! Selvie, playing in the same spot as DeMarcus Ware, had two sacks, and constantly put pressure on the Quarterback all night. His impressive performance had the coaching staff take notice. The Cowboys signed Selvie off the street on July 24th. Maybe he can provide the additional depth they desperately need with the absence of Tyrone Crawford. Sixth round draft pick DeVonte Holloman had a pick-six in what was the best play of the night. Reaching back against his body, Holloman poised himself after intercepting the ball to run for a 75 yard touchdown. Although it’s the first game of the preseason, the Cowboys already created points off turnovers, for what it’s worth. The injury concerns mounted for Garrett and the coaching staff. Safety Matt Johnson suffered a sprained ankle running down a Dolphins receiver. The second year talent is expected to contend for a starting safety spot. Additionally, defensive end Ben Bass hurt his knee during the game and didn’t return. The Cowboys are already paper thin on the defensive line.
