Today, Von Miller was suspended for the first six games of the NFL season without pay. After the preseason game on Saturday, there were rumors swirling around about a possible 6, instead of 4, game suspension for linebacker Von Miller. ESPN, citing anonymous sources reported that his extended suspension was still due to him violating the league’s substance abuse policy. This extended suspension comes from the result of negotiations between the NFL, Miller’s lawyers, and the NFL Player’s Association after the league found Miller in violation of the league’s substance abuse program this offseason, according to USA Today. Miller will not appeal any further, and the suspensions will begin after the Denver Broncos’ last preseason game. There was a dispute whether Miller’s violation should count as a second or third offense, after he spilled a urine sample which was found to be diluted. Miller was already in the drug program after a positive urine sample in 2011, his rookie year. A second violation would cause a four-game suspension, while a third offense would result in a year long suspension. Miller will miss games against the Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, then returning for the week seven game against the Indianapolis Colts, in Indianapolis. “The Substances of Abuse policy requires everyone to comply with the rules. Although my suspension doesn’t result from a positive test, there is no excuse for my violations of the rules. I made mistakes and my suspension has hurt my team, Broncos fans, and myself. I am especially sorry for the effect of my bad decisions on others. I will not make the same mistakes about adhering to the policy in the future. During my time off the field, I will work tirelessly and focus exclusively on remaining in peak shape. I look forward to contributing immediately upon my return to the field and bringing a championship back to the people of Denver,” Miller said in a statement released through the Broncos. Miller missed a practice last Thursday in order to appeal his then possible four-game suspension, and that gave us a look at what the defense could look like without him.Nate Irving was at strong side and Shaun Philips had taken over Miller’s pass-rushing role.
