It has become the norm this season, but Aqib Talib was the best player on the field on Sunday afternoon at Gillette Stadium. He was the best defender, best Patriot, best football player — better than Tom Brady or Drew Brees. Unfortunately, his greatness was only on display until the 9:27 mark in the third quarter. Talib layed out to push Darren Sproles out of bounds and grabbed his hip. He was lost for the remainder of the game. It wasn’t a giant surprise that the Saints marched down the field on the same drive to tie the Patriots 17-17. How New England chose to replace Talib was a bit of a surprise, though. Before Jimmy Graham, who Talib and the rest of the Patriots held catchless, got injured, the Patriots slid Devin McCourty down from safety to play cornerback. New England inserted rookie Duron Harmon at safety in McCourty’s place. When Graham was out, McCourty stayed at safety and Logan Ryan came in to play cornerback. There were also snaps when the Patriots used six defensive b...

Report: Aqib Talib Has Hip Flexor Injury

Aqib Talib has been playing out of his mind for the New England Patriots. The shutdown cornerback was a critical component of the Patriots defense of Jimmy Graham on Sunday and the Patriots have placed trust in Talib to cover every opponent's number one receiving threat. That is why Patriot fans held their breath when Talib limped off the field due to a non-contact injury...

Jimmy Graham shut down by Talib and Pats defense

Coming into Sunday's game against the Patriots, Jimmy Graham was an unstoppable force at tight end. In five games, he had already racked up 37 receptions, 593 yards, and six touchdowns. He was not able to add to any of those totals in Foxborough, as he was shut down entirely by Aqib Talib and others when Talib went down with a hip injury. Talib has been making a name for himself...

Aqib Talib Would Be Bigger Loss on Defense Than Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo and Other Patriots Thoughts

FOXBORO, Mass. – If there was such thing after six weeks of the season, Aqib Talib would undoubtedly be the Patriots’ team MVP. The cornerback has shut down Julio Jones, Roddy White, A.J. Green and Jimmy Graham in subsequent weeks. He made a game-saving play in the final seconds against the Falcons and has solidified the Patriots’ secondary with the help of his fellow...

Aqib Talib, Danny Amendola, Tommy Kelly not at Practice

Wednesday's practice had more missing notable names from it than usual and for the way that the Patriots' season has been going, that's pretty amazing. Jerod Mayo was placed on the season-ending injured reserve, so of course he was not present. More alarming were the absences of Aqib Talib, Danny Amendola and Tommy Kelly. Talib hobbled off the field in the...

Tom Brady says he isn’t fazed over Willie Colon’s hatred for the New England Patriots

With Jets-Patriots Week in full swing, Tom Brady — who has enough problems of his own as he deals with the tragedy that befell his face courtesy of a black eye, casually shrugged off New York Jets guard Willie Colon’s efforts at smack talk this week when he said he hates the New England Patriots. […]The post Tom Brady says he isn’t fazed over Willie Colon’s hatred for the...

Patriots place Jerod Mayo on injured reserve

The New England Patriots announced Wednesday that they have placed linebacker Jerod Mayo on injured reserve and re-signed defensive tackle Andre Neblett to the 53-man roster. Devin McCourty: 'We've all got to step up and be group captains'

Now that Jerod Mayo has joined Vince Wilfork on season-ending injured reserve questions about how good the Patriots will be defensively -- and who will be playing -- figure to dominate pregame chatter as they get set to face the Jets Sunday. Those football teams that use the next-man-up approach (the Patriots being one) are prepared for adversity even though they'd rather not...

Week 6 Risers and Fallers

No Gronk. No Wilfork. No Kelly. No Vereen. then... No Connolly. No Talib. No Amendola. No Mayo. In the end, the Patriots were left with Tom Brady and seventy-three seconds.  In the end, that was enough to defeat the undefeated New Orleans Saints.  When Kenbrell Thompkins came down with that ball in the end zone, I nearly lost it.  Ok, I did...
