“I usually tend to go with the guy that has the hot hand and we have two quarterbacks that have a hot hand.” That came right out of 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh after the 9ers took it to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. We always see the media or sometimes players start a QB controversy, but rarely we see a head coach start the fires of a quarterback battle. In all fairness to Alex Smith, a player who was knocked out of the game due to injury should never lose his starting role. Yes, Colin did a fantastic job against a Bears defense who is known for destroying the opposing offense. Players these days rely on film to see how they game plan against a team. There has not been that much footage on Kaepernick, so the Bears did not have that much to go on. Like Tim Tebow, defense were not able to game plan against him until there was enough film to create a battle plan. If Smith can’t go against the Saints this weekend, we get to see how Colin will play. I am very interested to see how he does in what would be his second start as the 9ers QB. Kaepernick did have a sense of control of the 49ers offense and was able to pass efficiently to give Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter room to run in the 9ers ground attack. Colin Kaepernick finished 16-of-23 for 243 yards and two scores and was able to get tight end Vernon Davis into the mix. For 49ers fans this is a great situation to be in. When you have two quarterbacks that can play at a high level and get a victory is a huge plus for teams looking to compete in the playoffs. Alex Smith should get the nod once he is cleared to play since he performed well last year and this year. I just hope with the off season issues such as the 9ers going for Peyton Manning and Smith not landing a multi-year contract will not effect his psyche on the field. Add what Harbaugh said about the QB situation the 9ers could have a really interesting rest of the year. For me, I am guessing this is just Jim Harbaugh’s way of getting the most out of his players.
