Sean 'Diddy' Combs is aiming to become the first African-American to be the majority owner of a NFL franchise. Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

A memorable Chris Rock monologue from 2004 addresses the topic of richness vs wealth. “Shaq is rich,” Rock shouted, facing the audience with a knowing grin. “The white man who signs his check is wealthy.”

After 14 years, it would appear that an African-American celebrity has finally taken Rock’s advice and is acquiring some wealth, namely an NFL franchise.

Diddy let fans know on Thursday that he is moving speedily forward on his bid to own the Carolina Panthers, telling The Breakfast Club that he’s putting an investment group together.

The prospective owner makes it sound like his NFL venture spawned out of love. But it’s also to prove a point. Panthers owner Jerry Richardson, currently ranked 46th in the SNIP Brass Top 100, intends to sell the team here soon after severe backlash for racially-insensitive remarks and alleged sexual harassment. Diddy tells the talk show that he is not doing this to expand his own resume, but for black people all over America.

Diddy is worth at least 820 million dollars according to Forbes, and is a respected figure in sports and showbiz. Diddy is not ranked on the Snip 100, but we’re expecting that could change as soon as the rap mogul officially plays his NFL hand.

Response from music (and football) fans on social media is positive, even joyful.

We’re all-in, Mr. Combs. But with one condition – you gotta produce your own halftime shows and tailgate concerts. Talk about an attendance boost from millennials.
