Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross spoke to the media Monday, citing the great work he feels first-time head coach Joe Philbin has done with the team, and expressed optimism that the rebuilding effort is on the right track. “I believe they have the talent to deliver day-in and day-out,” Ross said. “I would like to think next year we’re going to be in the playoffs, and winning.” “I was really impressed with Coach Philbin. We have a solid head coach here. … [And] I think we have our quarterback,” he said. The plan for Miami going forward is to fill some glaring voids through the draft, and they'll have plenty of options. This is where GM Jeff Ireland will be making decisions that could very well affect his employment beyond 2013. The Dolphins will have five of the first 82 picks in April’s draft and roughly $47 million in salary cap space to spend. Spend and choose wisely is the mantra here, but be careful. Ireland looks to have Ross's blessing in trying to make a splash next season. “I want to build a winning team. … I’m willing to spend whatever it takes to build it. If the right players are there, I don’t care what it costs,” Ross said. “We’ll go after them.”
