In a bombshell announcement, the Philadelphia Eagles announced that team President Joe Banner has stepped down.

Joe Banner has maintained a low profile throughout last season and this offseason. GM Howie Roseman has handled the bulk of contract negotiations, there has been a noticeable change in how the Eagles have done business.

The Eagles will promote Don Smolenski to team President, and Howie Roseman will take over all of Banner’s responsibilities in regards to contracts and managing the salary cap.

Banner will continue to be employed by the Eagles as a strategic advisor but was labeled by Jeffrey Lurie, Eagles owner and Banner’s long time friend as a “free agent.” Joe Banner has been with the Eagles since 1994 when Lurie originally bought the team from Norman Braman.

Banner said he wishes to pursue being part of a group that buys a team. Jeffrey Lurie offered high praise for Banner. During Banner’s tenure, the Eagles had an amazing run of success, but were often perceived in a less than flattering light. Banner earned the nickname “Nickels” with many fans for how he handled negotiations and in some cases left bad tastes in players’ and agents’ mouths.

Since Banner’s departure would seem to play in to the rumors of a power struggle with Andy Reid, that too was addressed. As expected, the team denied that a power struggle was the reason for Banner’s departure, but it is coincidental that this offseason saw almost a complete change in how the team does business and how it is perceived.

Banner was a successful executive and a great business mind. Like him or not, he was an integral part of the success of the Eagles. With that said, a number of agents and players have remarked about dealing with Howie Roseman and how much easier it was then in the past. Andy Reid was also said to be much more involved in negotiations as well.

It will be interesting to see how things play out going forward. For now, there seems to be a major changing in the guard at the Novacare Complex.
