They say the first cut is the deepest, but in the NFL the initial trimming of the roster, which for the Eagles will happen after this coming Thurday night's game against Jacksonville, is not necessarily the unkindest cut of all, because it allows time for some of the fallen to hook up with another team. Later this week the Eagles' roster will be trimmed from 80 to 75. After the September 3 preseason game with the Jets, the roster will be axed from 75 to 53. By September 6, each NFL team must establish a practice squad of 8 players, which offers redemption and employment to some of those who were lost in the numbers game. Some have already been sent packing. Florida Atlantic's DE Jervonte Jackson has already been the first rookie cut.
