Former Florida State star EJ Manuel made out better than many people expected in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday. The Buffalo Bills selected him with the 16th overall pick, and he ended up being the only quarterback taken in the first 32 selections. However, there was a brief moment when Manuel thought the night was going to turn out even better. Just before the Miami Dolphins announced that they had selected Oregon linebacker Dion Jordan with the third overall pick, Manuel got a phone call. He told “The Dan Patrick Show” on Wednesday that it turned out to be the wrong number. “When Dion Jordan got selected, someone called my hotline phone that was there at the draft,” Manuel said. “They were looking for Dion, but obviously I got excited because I heard it right. So I was like, man, that’s a prank call right here.” The Dolphins drafted Ryan Tannehill last season and he is going to be the team’s starter this year, so that would have made little sense. That being said, ev...

Jim Kelly hopes E.J. Manuel can deliver for the Bills

Former Bills great Jim Kelly believes E.J. Manuel gives the city of Buffalo as well as the Bills some hope for the future. “I think I’m as hopeful as every fan in Buffalo,” Kelly said, per the Buffalo News. “I live here. This is my home now. I said it earlier: You get tired of people always referring back to when I played. I don’t want to do that. I want to refer somebody...

Jon Gruden critical of Dion Jordan: He’s one-dimensional (Video)

Jon Gruden has been criticized for his easy-going commentary in the “Monday Night Football” booth, but he certainly showed his “Chucky” side when commenting on the Miami Dolphins’ selection of Dion Jordan at No. 3 overall in the NFL Draft on Thursday. Gruden, who is generally positive in his commentary, expressed many reservations about the Dolphins’ pick. “When I watch...

Bills' drafting E.J. Manuel lacked sound strategy

Since being promoted to the position of general manager, Buddy Nix's teams have gone 4-12, 6-10 and finally, 6-10. That's a crappy record that no general manager can actually defend. Why does he still have a job in the NFL? The worst part is 6-10 seems to be the high water mark for the Bills again this year. Yesterday I wrote that the Browns had essentially given up on...

A Q&A about EJ Manuel with an FSU Writer

I'll make it short. The Bills drafted EJ Manuel and I don't feel like going on YouTube to see his greatest hits and misses because I'm at work. Instead, I got a Q&A  about him from the boys from Unconquered Noles, the FSU blog for Bloguin. Enjoy. 1) What are his pros and weaknesses? EJ has the physical tools and work ethic to be successful. He's good...

Dolphins draft strategy: target playmakers

When the comissioner announced that the Miami Dolphins had acquired the third overall pick, the first player that came to mind was offensive tackle Lane Johnson. I know I wasn't alone there. Based on the Dolphins draft strategy of the past, it seemed likely that the team would once again draft for need and upgrade at the most glaring hole on the roster. Instead, Jeff Ireland...

I am not surprised by the Bills taking E.J. Manuel, neither are the NFL Scouts

E.J. Manuel is a very athletic quarterback, which is what Buffalo has been looking for since Buddy Nix has came to Buffalo.  Since Buddy came to B-Lo he wanted several quarterbacks, and they missed out.  They wanted Cam Newton first but he was taken by the Panthers. Then the horrendous trade they tried making to get Tim Tebow.  Well this year you have to give Buddy Nix and company...

Dolphins “shocked” they were able to get Dion Jordan

Miami Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland told the Miami Herald that they wanted Dion Jordan more than anyone and felt like that had to trade up to land him. “He was a player that we coveted quite a bit,” Ireland said. “We was very high on our board. We think he’s an outstanding talent, has tremendous versatility. He’s a great kid. We think the world of the player and...

Day Two Bills Predictions

The Buffalo Bills made a bold and surprising move on Thursday night when they selected quarterback EJ Manuel instead of Geno Smith or Ryan Nassib with the 16th overall pick. It caught a lot of flack from the so-called “draft experts” for being a pick that could have waited. While that may be the case, the Bills had a mission and idea in mind, and they did what they had to do...

USC WR Woods drafted by Bills at No. 41

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- The Buffalo Bills have selected Southern California junior receiver Robert Woods with the 41st pick in the NFL draft. Woods joins first-round selection Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel in what's becoming a revamped offense under rookie head coach Doug Marrone. Listed at 6-feet and 190 pounds, Woods was a three-year starter who had a school record...

Linemen & trades highlight surprising first round

There is one thing that is always unpredictable when it comes to trying to forecast the NFL draft. Team needs are easily identified and news leaks of players going to a particular team, but one thing you can rarely see coming is a trade. The when, who and where in the draft almost always blow up mock drafts. Mine was no different. But even with the surprises, my mock got five players...

Ireland Discusses Jordan Move

The Dolphins caused quite a stir when they moved up from 12th to third in the first round of the draft after a trade with the Oakland Raiders and then selected Oregon defensive end/outside linebacker Dion Jordan. GM Jeff Ireland discussed the transaction and the players shortly after the pick was announced.

Grading round 1 of the Dolphins draft.

Well, it is safe to say not many of us ‘experts’ saw this coming. Jeff Ireland is wheeling and dealing like a man possessed. Jeff Ireland reportedly began the trade up process targeting a certain WR many DolFans have been drooling over. However, the Bills refused to trade their pick within their own division. Instead of standing pat, which we fans have become accustomed too,...

Geno Smith reportedly changed his mind, will attend Day 2 of NFL Draft

No player was more disappointed after round one of the NFL Draft on Thursday night than former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. After a great deal of speculation that he could be the first quarterback taken, Smith sat at Radio City Music Hall and watched 32 players embark on a new life without hearing his name called. Instead, the Buffalo Bills took EJ Manuel with the 16th overall...

With the NFL Draft kicking off Thursday night; the top two players came off the board pretty much as the “experts” had predicted with Kansas City Chiefs drafting Eric Fisher, and the Jacksonville Jaguars taking Luke Joeckel. It was the Miami Dolphins that made the first big move when they traded picks with the Oakland Raiders to select linebacker Dion Jordan as the first game...
