John Elway on the sidelines, 2013 seasonI am sure you all have heard the story about the Cleveland Browns fan this week. If not on T.V., or the radio, then I am sure there is a Facebook or Twitter post about it. If not, here it is. There was an obituary from 55-year-old Mansfield, Ohio resident Scott Entsminger who requested six Cleveland Browns’ players as pallbearers so his team could “let him down one last time.” Funny, though I suppose being a die-hard Browns’ fan requires a lot of humor. This reminded me, to remind all of you, to count your blessings, Broncos’ fans. We are one lucky bunch. Sure, from the start of the Broncos’, 1960 in the AFL, until about 1967 was a bit rough. A record of 29-80-3 in those seven years. The two years until the NFL-AFL did a merger, weren’t bad, 5-8-1 (which they did in both ’69 and ’70) and 5-9 in ’68. However, as a total, the Broncos were the worst AFL team until the merger, with a 39-97-4 record. Finally, in 1978 the Broncos made their first playoff appearance. Unfortunately, they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round, 10-33. However, six Super Bowl appearances since, with two rings resulting from those, can, quite possibly make up for those dreadful years. It has been a long time since the Elway (as a player) days though. I remember that is when I became a Broncos fan. Both in the 1997 and ’98 Super Bowls, I sat on my Dad’s knee as he desperately tried to convert me into a Seattle Seahawks fan, in awe over this Elway fella’. Elway has given us, once again, the dawning of a new era. This time, as the GM, and with the signing of Peyton Manning over a year ago. A devastating loss to the Ravens, which we all remember, stopped the Denver Broncos’ chances of a metaphor-like rising of the Phoenix scenario, this year, no doubt, will be the resurrection fans have all been waiting for. With a powerhouse quarterback, some of the best talent in the league fighting for the starting running back position, and wide receivers that just won’t quit, the Broncos are a forced to be reckoned with. Though, as fans, we already know this.
