In 1999 the Cincinnati Bengals were awarded the third pick in the NFL draft. Coming off a season where the team finished 3-13. The franchise desperately needed a player that could come in and get them out of the dark. That year the NFL Draft was loaded with potentially great quarterback prospects, and as we all know, a quarterback is the one player that has the ability to furnish wins immediately for a ball club. After Tim Couch and Donovan McNabb were selected one and two, the Cincinnati Bengals next best option was, dual-threat quarterback, Akili Smith. Smith was seen as a revolutionary qb. One that posessed skills the franchise had never seen before; Unfortunately the success a player had in college does not always translate to success at the next level. Smith is a prime example of that. The former first-rounder lasted just four seasons in the NFL. He played in just 22 of those games, registering a 3-14 record in 17 starts. Smith was released in 2002 after appearing in just one contest, where he notched a 36% completion rate, and that was the end of a short-lived career. Akili was without question one of the NFL’s worst picks of all-time.
