We’ve spent some time in this space discussing Patriots backup QB Brian Hoyer, who is a restricted free agent. My belief is that he’ll be given the first-round tender when it’s all said and done.
Well, ex-Colts GM Bill Polian spoke to a small group of media members earlier, and I had some questions. Namely, what he learned about team-building after the Peyton Manning injury and how the team collapsed. The excuses came quickly.
“No. 1, don’t have injuries,” Polian said. “And don’t have them in big bunches, either, specifically not the offensive line. And six starters on defense. You can’t overcome that. You don’t use injuries as an excuse or a crutch during the season, but when you lose, I think we lost nine starters, excluding Peyton for the bulk of the season, you can’t overcome that. That’s just the perfect storm.”
That was one. Want more excuses? Sure, he had them. And Polian admitted a personal failing.
