FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. Falcons defensive end John Abraham, speaking for the first time since his arrest on Monday for the misdemeanor charges of obstruction of police and obstruction of firefighters, said on Thursday that the situation was one of bad timing. Abraham, a 13-year veteran, is the NFLs active sacks leader. He signed a three-year deal worth 16.7 million to remain in Atlanta over the offseason. He was the second Falcons player arrested in a week after running back Michael Turner was arrested the previous week on charges of speeding and suspicion of DUI. Abraham did not want to go into details of what happened, as he said the legal issues still need to be resolved. He has a condo at 12, the tower at the Midtown Atlanta residential and commercial development where he was arrested. According to reports, firefighters had responded to the scene as a woman was threatening to leap from the building and commit suicide. Officers were attempting to clear people from the area and Abraham was warned multiple times not to go inside police tape. He eventually was arrested when he refused to comply. Abraham was asked on Thursday if he thought perhaps he had exercised bad judgment. I cant say I did or didnt, Abraham said. Like I say, sometimes Im just going to keep saying, bad timing. I cant say exactly what did -- you cant really judge what happened Trying to work through it. The arrest comes at a time when the Falcons are 3-0 and host NFC South Division rival Carolina on Sunday at the Georgia Dome. I dont fault anybody at all, Abraham said. Sometimes things happen in life. Sometimes try doing the right things, sometimes dont end up being the right things. So it happened. He said he spoke to Falcons head coach Mike Smith about the situation but did not elaborate. Smith reiterated disappointment to reporters on Tuesday as he did previously when Turner was arrested.

Ryan turns perceived slight in Falcons' favor

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan still won't criticize his NFL colleagues for leaving him off a list of the league network's top 100 players this summer. Instead, Ryan has turned that slight to his favor. He has emerged as the NFL leader in passer rating, completion percentage and touchdowns. Now in his fifth year, Ryan finally has a top cast of playmakers and a steady...

Atlanta Falcons: Week 4 NFL Power Rankings (#2)

Last week: 5 (+3) Record: 3-0 As many good teams as there are in the NFC, there isn’t a clear favorite. Maybe I just like poking holes in teams. Atlanta, however, is the best the NFC has right now and the favorite to represent them in the Super Bowl. The hole you can poke in them is that they rank just 10th in yards per play differential and they’re dominating the turnover battle...

Atlanta Falcons: Tony Gonzalez Still Dominating Defenses at 36

Atlanta Falcons tight end, Tony Gonzalez, has one of my favorite nicknames of all time, "Gonzo".I don't know if it is somehow tied to the "origin of parts unknown" Muppet character with the curly, odd-shaped nose.Or if the name is derived from the actual word which the Muppet character was named for.The chicken or the egg? Who cares.Gonzo is a fitting nickname...

Improved Safety Play is Behind Atlanta's Defensive Success

When Brent Grimes went down in the closing minutes of the week one contest against the Kansas City Chiefs many thought it wasn't anything serious. He was able to walk off completely under his own power and even though he was limping it didn't seem too bad. The bad news came early in the week following the game. Brent Grimes had torn his Achilles. Within a blink of an eye...
