Notable Points

  • Judging from this practice alone, Matt Flynn is the clear-cut favorite to start in week 1 of the regular season. Flynn, as advertised, showed crispness in his mechanics and his accuracy was top-notch, (only 3 incompletions during the entire practice). He often checked down short passes rather than airing it out deep, but did flash his arm on several occasions as noted in the highlights section below.
  • Russell Wilson and Tarvaris Jackson struggled. Both had spurts where 3-4 straight throws would be incompletions. Wilson recovered and led some spectacular drives, but Jackson looked lost for a greater portion of the day. Sporadically he would make an eye-opening throw but was otherwise average, making me wonder whether he was actually focused on football or not (trade rumors are swirling).
  • Doug Baldwin and Sidney Rice were full-participants in practice. Both looked fast and fluid in their routes. Golden Tate was still sidelined with a hand injury.
  • Terrell Owens in particular was very sharp for most of practice. He repeatedly victimized Jeremy Lane and other young defenders, snagging passes all over the field. The same could be said for Deon Butler. Could he be legitimately contending for a spot on the roster?
  • There were an unusual amount of drops today, even from the likes of notable receivers. Baldwin, Owens, and Kellen Winslow all had key drops and Jermaine Kearse’s lapses in concentration from his Washington days continued at practice.
  • The Seahawk defense has dominated the offense throughout most of the pre-season, but that was not the case today. More often than not, things were going the offense’s way at today’s practice. Is this a sign of good things to come?

 

Notable Highlights/Lowlights

  • Terrell Owens dropped the very first ball thrown to him, drawing a large drown of boos from the crowd. Take note that this was on individual routes against no defenders, and it was a measly 10-yard pass from Wilson.
  • Outside of the drop mentioned above, Owens shined. He beat Marcus Trufant during a scrimmage for a medium-gain, then came right back to beat rookie Jeremy Lane for a 20-yard gain. On a separate occasion, Owens again beat Lane for a 6-yard TD. His best play came on a 50-yard completion near the sideline from Wilson, once again over Lane.
  • Near the beginning of practice, Braylon Edwards leaped high into the air while running to snag a sailing Russell Wilson pass with one hand.
  • Matt Flynn showed off his hidden arm on a 60-yard bomb down the sideline to Ben Obomanu, over the outstretched arms of Lane. For a rookie that talks as much Lane, he sure got beaten a lot by his teammates!
  • Deon Butler had a few nice plays, most notably a diving catch while being defended by Roy Lewis.
  • One of the few defensive highlights of the day came from cornerback Philip Adams, who used his body to shield out Braylon Edwards on a deep TD attempt from Wilson and intercepted it. Lane redeemed himself partially with a similar play against Lavasier Tuinei, but came up with a pass deflection instead of an interception.
