As you know the past two days the rookies an quarterbacks have been practicing and going through drills. Coming in to training camp there has been two big questions on this team. Who will step up and be WR2 and who will fill the hole next to DJ at the second ILB spot? Well after the first day of practice, the wide receivers were looking good. Of course the wide receivers that are at camp now will be nothing compared to the guys that will be reporting Thursday. Wide receivers Tyler Shoemaker and Rico Richardson apparently made some impressive grabs and most of the other balls thrown to the receivers were caught. According to Andy Reid, rookie linebacker Nico Johnson will “absolutely” be in the running for a starting spot on the defensive side of the ball. That excites me. I am really high on Johnson out of Alabama and really think that he will complete the “Fearsome Foursome” at linebacker that the Chiefs seem to be going for. Other big news coming out of the first day of practice is that WR Donnie Avery, TE Tony Moeaki, and RB Shaun Draughn, who were all injured earlier this summer during OTAs, were on the practice field and all looked good. However, the injury bug continues to nip at the Chiefs as rookie defensive-back Sanders Commings went out of practice with a shoulder injury. Commings went up to deflect a pass and when he came down, he fell on his left shoulder. After getting x-rays done on the injured shoulder, it was now known that Commings fractured his collarbone and could be out anywhere from 2-12 weeks is what I’m getting since collarbone injuries can vary from one another. Out of the second day of practices, the rave was not about the players, as it was about head coach Andy Reid and his impact in St. Joseph at Chiefs training camp. From what I read in http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/article-2/The-Andy-Reid-Influence-at-Chiefs-Camp/d9e5cb46-2bab-42d5-995f-d19c4a7a0d58, was that players love his style. Andy Reid seems to always be moving from one end of the field to the other to watch the different position groups take reps in drills. His attention to detail is great as he has shown that when helping out WR Junior Hemingway. “It means a lot,” Hemingway said. “It shows that he wants everything done in a precise way. He wants us to be on the same page with him, with everything. Everybody wants to get better. Everybody wants to do everything right because of his involvement of what we want to do. He’s looking for our best interest. He wants us to have the same success every time we step on the field.” However, Reid has received some criticism from Chiefs fans and reporters as he has not run a single run play in the first two practices at camp. Personally, I don’t think it’s a big deal at all. As I’ve expressed in this blog before, the Chiefs passing game was horrendous. That being said, with a new offense being employed and three new quarterbacks being brought in, I think that working on refining the skills of these quarterbacks and the young receivers is ideal in this situation. Once all the veterans start practicing I believe more run plays will be ran, but in my mind our running game is pretty good already so I’m perfectly okay with Reid working on the passing game so much. Today, the veterans will be reporting to camp and the team’s first official full-team practice will be Friday. The whole off-season has built up to this moment, the start of the football season. Sure it is just practices, but having the Kansas City Chiefs back on the field is getting me more and more excited. Follow @TheDrewClark
