LAST WEEK STRAIGHT UP: 12-4 SEASON STRAIGHT UP: 113-63 LAST WEEK VS. SPREAD: 8-8 SEASON VS. SPREAD: 93-80-3 EAGLES (-3) AT SEAHAWKS (Thursday night) Realistically, the Eagles' playoff hopes are long gone. These are two teams playing out the string. What we could see is the Eagles totally tanking it, especially having to make a long trip west on a short week. Or we could see Vince Young light it up. Eagles 23, Seahawks 14 CHIEFS (8) AT BEARS Will it be Tyler Palko or Kyle Orton? Will it matter? The Chiefs again are in a no-win situation. Palko will get eaten alive by the turnover-hungry Bears, who will bait him into even more picks than he threw against the Steelers. Even after a week of studying the plays and learning the names of his offensive line, there's still no way Orton can be remotely in sync with his receivers. In other words, this one could get ugly, even with inexperienced Caleb Hanie at QB for the Bears. At home, and with the playoffs on the line, the Bears defense and special teams will turn it up -- they'll have to, because Romeo Crennel's defense has been tough and won't go down without a fight. Bears 20, Chiefs 6 STEVES EXTRA POINTS How in the world can a sensible person handicap this game? Todd Haley insists that hell stick with Tyler Palko -- the lad with seven turnovers in two games -- at quarterback, with Kyle Orton presumably staying warm in the bullpen. The Bears need a win desperately, but theyll struggle on offense, too -- Caleb Hainie will never be confused with Johnny Unitas. Or even Jay Cutler. The Chiefs can cover the touchdown-plus spread, and maybe even take a shot at winning the game, if they dont turn the ball over and hand points to the Bears on a platter. Neither offense figures to run up and down the field, so the result almost certainly will come down to which team makes the most mistakes. While everyone is waiting for the Chiefs to make another batch of mistakes, dont be shocked if their tough, improving defense puts that same kind of pressure on the Bears. Haley insists that Palko will improve now that hes worked a bit more with the offensebut does anyone really believe that? After wrestling on even terms with the Steelers, the Chiefs have shown that its not all that smart to bet against them -- not with an 8-point spread. By the way, if Orton gets in the game, its worth pointing out that he does know the Bears doggone well -- and might even be able to find a free touchdown lying around somewhere. And for what its worth, the Chiefs have not quit on Haley despite everything thats gone wrong. If the Chiefs score 10 points -- I know, I know -- the Bears basically need three TDs to cover the spread. I wouldnt bet on that with YOUR money. Anyone who wagers on this game probably needs the phone number of Gamblers Anonymous. --STEVE CAMERON PACKERS (-7) AT GIANTS The Giants are reeling, having lost three straight since that stunning upset of the Patriots on the road. This is typical of the Giants -- they always swoon in the second half. But that effort Monday night against the Saints was truly pathetic. If they play that way again, they will get booed off the field. Actually, the Packers are so good it may not matter how well the Giants play. We keep waiting for the Packers to fall into a trap game. Is this it? Nah. Packers 31, Giants 20 TITANS (1 12) AT BILLS The Bills played hard and had a chance to pull off a mild upset on the road against the Jets last week. But the Bills simply have forgotten how to win. They certainly have a good shot this week against a so-so Titans team. Anyone's guess. Stay away from this one. Bills 17, Titans 14 RAIDERS (3) AT DOLPHINS Wow, a lot of respect for the 3-8 Dolphins against the division-leading Raiders. I agree that the Dolphins are playing much better over the last month. But the Raiders have to be more motivated. I see a game marred by turnovers and penalties -- and somehow, through all the sloppiness, the Raiders snatch a win. Raiders 26, Dolphins 24 BENGALS (7) AT STEELERS The Bengals better play a whole lot better than they did last week if they want to hang with the Steelers. I think they will, but even the short-handed Steelers usually find a way to grind out wins at home in games they need. Should be close, though. Steelers 23, Bengals 17 RAVENS (-6 12) AT BROWNS The Browns have now played three fairly decent games in a row. In other words, the Ravens better not take this lightly. Look for the Ravens' defense to respond and completely shut down the Browns. Ravens 16, Browns 3 JETS (-3) AT REDSKINS No ifs about it -- the Jets can't afford to lose. Every game is a playoff game to them now -- at least that's how they have to approach it. The Jets were far from impressive in slipping past the Bills at home, and really, I should be leaning toward the Redskins after their nice win on the road last week. But I still think the Jets' veterans will rise up and do what's necessary here. Jets 21, Redskins 17 FALCONS (-2 12) AT TEXANS Hard to believe this spread is this small. Yes, I know the Texans' defense is much, much better this season. But when your quarterback situation is so bleak that you're actually considering bringing back 42-year-old Brett Favre... this has to be all Falcons. Falcons 27, Texans 10 PANTHERS (3 12) AT BUCS The Bucs are simply circling down the drain. The last-minute collapse to the Titans should put the finishing touches on whatever incentive they had to play hard. The Panthers, on the other hand, didn't start the season with any great expectations. This would be a nice building win for them, and they just might get it. Panthers 20, Bucs 13 LIONS (9) AT SAINTS This is a whopper spread -- but understandable considering how the Saints just got done pasting the Giants. The Lions, though, have the ability to hang around in a shootout. This could be a wild one. Saints 44, Lions 36 BRONCOS (Pick) AT VIKINGS OK, I'm done picking against Tim Tebow. I have no idea how he's doing it -- actually the Broncos' defense is doing it more than anything Tebow is doing. Whatever, I'm done picking against him. Broncos 16, Vikings 14 RAMS (13 12) AT 49ERS The 49ers have had a few extra days to think about that tough loss at Baltimore. They should have a much easier time against the Rams defense. It's a big spread, but the Rams seem to find multiple ways to give up touchdowns. 49ers 30, Rams 13 COWBOYS (-4 12) AT CARDS Kind of a tough one to call. The Cardinals have been sneaky good at times, especially because of their weapons on special teams. The Cowboys are rolling, though, and there will be a lot of Cowboy fans cheering them on in the desert. Cowboys 31, Cardinals 23 COLTS (20 12) AT PATRIOTS This is the biggest spread we've seen in the NFL in a while. The Colts are going with a new quarterback and a new defensive coordinator. Good luck. The only problem is whether the Patriots will remain interested enough to keep a three-touchdown edge. Patriots 31, Colts 10 CHARGERS (-2 12) AT JAGS The Jags are going with the same quarterback (Gabbert) but a new owner and a new coach. Hmmm. Actually, it's hard to say which team is a bigger mess right now. It'd be fitting if this game ended in an overtime tie. Chargers 23, Jags 20
