The Rap Sheet:
The Patriots love value. We end up discussing it during every draft, and as they make any personnel move. Turns out, Forbes loves it, too.
The magazine just released its annual list of the NFL’s most valuable franchises, and the Patriots landed at No. 3. Not bad. They are behind the No. 1 Cowboys and the No. 2 Redskins.
Check out Forbes’ entire research project, including the NFL valuations, in this link.
One interesting thing this year is that eight teams actually declined in value (thanks to the economy), which is the first time that happened. The Patriots, however, did not.
Forbes rates them as the league’s second-most profitable team, earning $71 million this past year. They are worth, officially, $1.367 billion and have an operating budget of more than $103 million. (I know, I know, pay everyone!)
Here is the entire list.

Patriots 53-Man Projection Take 3
We have seen another week of Patriots preseason action, so it is time once again to take stock of what we’ve seen and try to project who will make the 53-man roster. After looking over my second attempt at projecting the roster, there are a few major changes that have to be made. Ron Brace has returned to the roster, Torry Holt was placed on IR and released after an injury...
A new wrinkle: Patriots guard Logan Mankins is financially secure enough to sit out the season
Patriots guard Logan Mankins has not shown up to training camp, continuing a stance that he began when he didn’t sign his restricted free agent tender in the spring. So, Mankins is still not under contract, meaning he’s given up at least the $3.3 million tender that was offered to him.
In short, barring a trade and/or renegotiation Mankins is now scheduled to make zero...
Patriots RB Laurence Maroney says about his Madden rating… “WHAT!!??”
Talking with running back Laurence Maroney, it’s like that box of chocolates reference in the movie Forrest Gump: ”You never know what you’re going to get.”
A harmless question about his Madden ratings prompted the following hysterical rant:
”Oh man. They got me a terrible old man, man. I want to tell Madden that, too. You know what’s crazy? I...
Patriots Sleepwalk Through Third Preseason Game
The Patriots looked woefully bad against the Rams in their third preseason game, which is considered the most important due to the starters playing into the second half. The first team defense looked especially woeful, giving up 20 points to a rookie quarterback on a 1-15 team. Sam Bradford looked like a veteran QB, completing 15/21 passes for 189 yards and 2 touchdowns. That, however...
Post Game Q&A with TE Rob Gronkowski
Here’s the complete postgame Q&A between rookie tight end Rob Gronkowski and the media after tonight’s Patriots-Rams game:
Did you know you’d get as much time as you did?
No. I’m going out there and whenever coach puts me in, I’m just going to go out there and work hard. It’s great getting time out there. I’m just going to go out there — whenever he puts me in...
Pats Ink Kicker Stephen Gostkowski to a Four-Year Extension
The Patriots have agreed to a contract extension with kicker Stephen Gostkowski. Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald reports that Gostkowski received a four-year extension that averages $3.5 million per season, and includes $5 million in guarantees. Gostkowski’s deal will keep him in Foxborough until 2014.
A fourth-round pick (118th overall) out of Memphis in 2006, Gostkowski was...
Expect to see the Patriots starters for a while tomorrow night… right?
The most reasonable expectation for tomorrow night’s Patriots-Rams game is that the starters will play into the third quarter. That’s status quo for a third preseason game.
If that happens, no one will be surprised. But is it possible they’ll play a little longer because they didn’t have the practice reps of the previous two weeks without any joint practices...
Gotskowski Shows Mankins How It’s Done
Logan Mankins should follow Gostkowski's model if he wants a new deal. Source: Yardbarker.com
As reported earlier, the Patriots have signed kicker Stephen Gostkowski to a four-year contract extension. This move is a stark contrast to the movement, or lack thereof, with Logan Mankins’ contract situation. Both players entered the 2010 offseason in similar situations, as restricted...
OL Brian Simmons shrugs off clubfoot — really — to try to make the Patriots … and links!
The only way I could tell that Brian Simmons was stricken with the deformity called clubfoot is that his right calf is noticeably thinner than his left one. He points to it to make sure I see it, then hits his right thigh.
“You look at that right there — the thigh — that’s where the power’s coming from,” Simmons told me with a smile yesterday after practice. “So, it...

Patriots LB Gary Guyton begins the battle for his own starting spot… and links!
One of the most awkward things in sports, I always think, is when a starter misses significant time with an injury and returns to find someone else has taken his parking spot. Or starting spot.
And every coach handles it differently, most players approach it differently, and every situation is different. It’s always awkward.
But regardless, that seems to be the situation for...
Logan Mankins doesn't need the money
Some think that, at some point before the start of the regular season, Patriots offensive lineman Logan Mankins will sign his restricted free agent tender (albeit reduced), play the 2010 season, and become an unrestricted free agent after the season.But...

Patriots-Rams in-game update: Patriots score first, but Rams tie it up at 7-7
Brandon Tate was impressive, returning the game's opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to give the Pats the early 7-0 lead just 12 seconds into the game, but Rams rookie quarterback Sam Bradford answered on St. Louis' ensuing...
4th and 2 – Patriots-Rams Preseason Primer
Recently I had a chance to exchange some thoughts with Will Horton of RamsHerd.com on four topics leading up to tonight’s game with St. Louis. In keeping with the same theme, I’ll be running out four Patriots related topics to be watching for as well. We’ll finish up with two players to keep an eye on, one from each side of the ball.
Let’s start with the Pats...
