It’s that time of year when injuries pop up in minicamps and proven veterans become hot commodities. The ACL injury linebacker Melvin Ingram suffered has opened the door for Dwight Freeney who has been looking for a team to hook onto. Freeney’s contract demands were too rich for NFL teams, but Freeney has lowered his demands looking for a similar deal Osi Umenyiora received with the Atlanta Falcons. Freeney may not be the best fit for the Charger though; he struggled in the Colts 3-4 as an outside linebacker in 2012, after spending his entire as a defensive end in a 4-3. According to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego, Freeney will pay the Chargers a visit on Wednesday to see if he can fill the void left by the Ingram injury. Gehlken writes: ‘Freeney, 33, spent the first 10 years of his career as a Colts defensive end. He switched to outside linebacker last year when Indianapolis changed from a 4-3 to 3-4 scheme. The transition came under coach Chuck Pagano, brother of Chargers defensive coordinator John Pagano. There is another clear link between Freeney and the team, as Tom Telesco worked in the Colts personnel department for 15 years before becoming the Chargers' general manager in January.’ Freeney totaled 12 tackles and 5 sacks in 2012.
