Man, McDaniels is pretty loathed right now. Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

It goes without saying that New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has found himself as a highly divisive figure around the NFL world after spurning the Indianapolis Colts. We’ve seen a former Colts head coach put him on absolute blast. Heck, McDaniels’ own agent parted ways with him.

Now comes this bit of insight from former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, who obviously isn’t holding back his opinion on the matter.

“I was absolutely shocked,” Weis said on SiriusXM Radio (h/t the Boston Globe). ‘It’s like a slap in the face…“If he’s (McDaniels) not (the heir apparent), then that would’ve been the absolute dumbest move in the history of sports.”

Weis knows a little something about how the Patriots are run. He served in a variety of assistant roles with the team from 1993-1996 before ultimately taking over as Bill Belichick’s offensive coordinator from 2000-2004.

There’s been speculation that McDaniels is now being groomed to eventually replace Belichick as the Patriots’ head coach. Though, if that doesn’t come to fruition, it’s sensible to believe that McDaniels options with the league’s 31 other teams would be limited. That’s what Weis is talking about here.
