IRVING, Texas After praising the job Rob Ryan has done with the Cowboys defense, Jason Garrett was asked Monday what kind of head coach his defensive coordinator would make. It's no secret that Ryan would like to join his brother, Rex Ryan, in the NFL's head coaching ranks. "I think Rob is just and outstanding coach," the Cowboys head coach said. "I just think he does so many things well. He relates to the players so well. He's a really good scheme coach. He's been around it his whole life. I think he would make an outstanding head coach." Despite several significant injuries on the defensive side of the ball, the unit continues to play well. Injuries have caused Barry Church (6), Jay Ratliff (4) Sean Lissemore (4), Sean Lee (3), Kenyon Coleman (2), Anthony Spencer (2), Dan Connor (2), Mike Jenkins (2) and Gerald Sensabaugh (1) to miss a total of 26 games. But the Cowboys have managed to stay among the league's top 10 defenses, allowing 318.8 yards per game. "I think there are so many traits that Rob has as a coach and as a person that are really positive for everybody, positive for the coaching staff, certainly for the players and for our whole football team," Garrett said. "He's a really good football mind. We all know that. He does have a personality about him that really gets people going. "In so many of the descriptions I got of Rob before we hired him a couple years ago, everybody said, 'Line 1 with Rob Ryan is that guys want to play for him.' He has a great track record of that as a position coach both in the NFL and in college and as a coordinator in this league, as well. I think we've seen that. I think he's helped the young guys. He has a way of instilling confidence in them and helping them play through some of the struggles. Of all his great traits that's certainly one of them, and one that we're really pleased that he has." Follow Jon Machota on Twitter: @jonmachota
