The New York Jets defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their season opener behind the foot of Nick Folk, who hit a 48-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining. Nick Folk hit the game winning 48-yard field goal to give the Jets a 1-0 record. The Jets were down 17-15 when Geno Smith and the Jets offense took the field on the 20-yard line with remaining. Smith completed a pass to Winslow for 25 yards to get the ball close to mid-field. On the next play, Smith took off trying to get into field goal range when he was hit out of bounds at the Tampa Bay 47 yard line that resulted in a 15 yard personal foul penalty. Nick Folk lined up and booted the ball right down the uprights for the Jets first win of the season. The Jets breathed a sigh of relief after fighting their tails off all game. Geno Smith was 24 of 38 for 256 yards, a touchdown, an interception and a sack that resulted in a fumble. With that being said, Smith and the Jets fought on offense all day. It was ugly at times but Smith got the offense going when he needed to. Smith rushed for 47 yards and in result was the Jets leading rusher. Santonio Holmes played but was not that effective. The impact player on the Jets? No other than free agent pick up tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. who caught 7 passes for 79 yards and a touchdown. On the other side of the ball the defense held Josh Freeman to 210 yards passing and halted Doug Martin to only 65 yards rushing. The Jets were very impressive up front and forced a safety in the first half to get the Jets on the board. The Jets didn’t let the Buccaneers get anything going on offense. They sacked Freeman 3 times and forced an interception. The defense kept the Jets in the game and Smith delivered for the team. The Jets travel to New England Thursday and hope that the defense can control Tom Brady and the Patriots offense. Geno Smith will get his first road test against arguably the greatest quarterback coach tandem of all time. The Jets will need to keep it low scoring if they have a chance to improve to 2-0 and shock the NFL world.
