No player was more disappointed after round one of the NFL Draft on Thursday night than former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith. After a great deal of speculation that he could be the first quarterback taken, Smith sat at Radio City Music Hall and watched 32 players embark on a new life without hearing his name called. Instead, the Buffalo Bills took EJ Manuel with the 16th overall pick, and he wound up being the only quarterback taken in the first round. At the conclusion of the evening, Smith was reportedly so upset that he declined to do an on-camera interview and said he would not be attending Day 2 in New York. He may have changed his mind. West Virginia QB Geno Smith has decided to remain in New York and will be attending the draft tonight in Radio City Music Hall. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 26, 2013 Smith was clearly speaking out of frustration on Thursday night, and you can’t really blame him. He was looking sharp, his family was there and he was introduced w...

I said it earlier: You get tired of people always referring back to when I played. I don’t want to do that. I want to refer somebody...

Rams Shopping Their No. 22 Overall Pick?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the second-first round pick, No. 22 overall, “clearly is for sale.“ This could be where teams in need of a quarterback begin to trade back into the first round for someone like Geno Smith, Ryan Nassib or E.J. Manual. Many expect the Rams to target a wide receiver at pick No. 16 overall, so maybe feel as though their first round targets...

A Q&A about EJ Manuel with an FSU Writer

I'll make it short. The Bills drafted EJ Manuel and I don't feel like going on YouTube to see his greatest hits and misses because I'm at work. Instead, I got a Q&A  about him from the boys from Unconquered Noles, the FSU blog for Bloguin. Enjoy. 1) What are his pros and weaknesses? EJ has the physical tools and work ethic to be successful. He's good...

EJ Manuel accidentally got phone call meant for No. 3 pick Dion Jordan

Former Florida State star EJ Manuel made out better than many people expected in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday. The Buffalo Bills selected him with the 16th overall pick, and he ended up being the only quarterback taken in the first 32 selections. However, there was a brief moment when Manuel thought the night was going to turn out even better. Just before the Miami...

Geno Smith not returning for Round 2

The NFL Draft came and went with several significant surprises, perhaps none more shocking than the Buffalo Bills taking quarterback EJ Manuel in the middle of the first round. What makes the selection even more surprising is that former West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith was available at the time. Smith fell past the Bills and every other team in the first round, and the top prospect...

Day Two Bills Predictions

The Buffalo Bills made a bold and surprising move on Thursday night when they selected quarterback EJ Manuel instead of Geno Smith or Ryan Nassib with the 16th overall pick. It caught a lot of flack from the so-called “draft experts” for being a pick that could have waited. While that may be the case, the Bills had a mission and idea in mind, and they did what they had to do...

Broncos Sign DE/OLB Shaun Phillips

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Denver Broncos are signing OLB Shaun Phillips. Phillips, 31, receives a one-year contract for Denver and figures to compete for the team’s starting defensive ends spot across from Von Miller. Phillips has spent his entire nine-year career in San Diego, but apparently was no longer a part of the team’s future plans. It’s worth noting...

Chargers Claim Former Packers LB D.J. Smith

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Chargers have claimed former Packers LB D.J. Smith off of waivers. Green Bay surprisingly waived Smith on Wednesday, with the move being listed as a failed physical. A source told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the move was likely to create an additional roster spot for their draft class and undrafted free agents. Last year, Smith suffered...

Linemen & trades highlight surprising first round

There is one thing that is always unpredictable when it comes to trying to forecast the NFL draft. Team needs are easily identified and news leaks of players going to a particular team, but one thing you can rarely see coming is a trade. The when, who and where in the draft almost always blow up mock drafts. Mine was no different. But even with the surprises, my mock got five players...
