New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will hope to forget about his first NFL start after a horrendous performance Saturday night against the New York Giants.
Geno Smith struggled in his first start with three interceptions and a safety.
Smith, who was battling an ankle injury since week one of the preseason, was named the starter against the Giants for the Jets third preseason game. Smith was 16 of 30 for 199 yards and a touchdown. However, Smith threw three interceptions and ran out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
It’s unlikely after Geno Smiths performance Saturday night, that he will be named the starter. Smith’s turnovers are a clear sign that he is not ready to start week one. Smith has struggled as of late turning the ball over in practice and in the preseason games. Smith only threw six interceptions all season last year at West Virginia.
What left many people scratching their head was Rex Ryan’s decision to play Mark Sanchez late in the game against the second team. Sanchez was 5 of 6 for 72 yards, but left the game with a shoulder injury. Ryan was very defensive in his post game press conference when asked questions about playing Sanchez and when he will name the starting quarterback. After Smith’s performance, it was shocking to see Sanchez go in especially since he will most likely be the starter. Ryan put Sanchez in a tough spot and it ended up with Sanchez getting injured.
If Sanchez is healthy it is clear he will be the starter over Smith. Sanchez hasn’t looked great but has been better then Smith in practice and in the preseason games. Either way the Jets offense will be anemic this year and with four tough games to start the season, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Smith is the starter by week five anyway.
Mark Sanchez left with a shoulder injury and is having x-rays on it today. Rookie Dee Milliner did not play last night due to a calf strain. Antonio Cromartie left the game in the first quarter with soreness in his hip and did not return. Kyle Wilson who stepped in for both Milliner and Cromartie struggled immensely. Wilson was called for three pass interference penalties on the night.
Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes was running routes on the field Saturday before the game. The Jets desperately need Holmes to return to the field as quick as possible.
BEST OF MAXIM
In his first real game as a rookie Geno Smith looks horrible. I am sorry but this guys is looking really bad. I am not counting him out but his mistakes are killing the Jets. Earlier this week the New York Daily said that if Geno wanted to start he could not make a mistake, […]
The New York Jets wanted rookie Geno Smith to win the starting quarterback, but the West Virginia product has done his best to squander that opportunity. Smith threw three interceptions in one half of the team’s third preseason game, which is often viewed as the most important preseason contest. He got the opportunity to start […]
Mark Sanchez entered Saturday nights preseason game in the fourth quarter and was sacked three times before exiting with a shoulder injury.
Sanchez had been competing with Geno Smith for the starting quarterback job of the Jets.
Mark Sanchez had XRays. He will also be undergoing a MRI, I'm told. #nyj

That was Jets quarterback Geno Smith looking on as Mark Sanchez leaves the game in the fourth quarter with a shoulder injury against the Giants. There’s no denying the semi-evil smirk on his face as if he’s saying “I just became a starting NFL quarterback, let’s go.” Sanchez and Smith have been competing with each other in a lesser-of-two-evils position battle all training...
The New York Jets emphasized eliminating turnovers this preseason, so when rookie Geno Smith tossed three first half interceptions Saturday night, he waived goodbye to his chances of starting in 2013.
While Geno Smith's 3 INT night may look bad on paper, former Jets TE Anthony Becht sees promise in the QB.
#Jetsnation after watching last nights game GenoSmiths performance was one of most accurate I've seen a QB in NY since Chad Pennington..cont

Mark Sanchez is already a laughing stock and the butt fumble of just about any joke you can think of. Well, let’s welcome Dan Orlovsky Geno Smith to the list of Jets that we can rip on this season. Check out the GIF below:

The New York Jets always have something on deck to keep us interested.
After Mark Sanchez suffered a shoulder injury in fourth quarter action on Saturday, the team has brought in two veterans to potentially play the stopgap role.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie had some harsh words for New York Daily News reporter Manish Mehta today.
Christie clearly didn’t like that his buddy Rex Ryan was asked by Mehta if rookie Geno Smith will start week one now that Mark Sanchez is injured, per The Big Lead.
Chris Christie, the Governor of New Jersey, went on WFAN radio in New York this morning and called an NFL...
Mark Sanchez won't play in New York's preseason finale Thursday versus Philadelphia. SOURCE: Adam Schefter, ESPNFantasy Spin:Sanchez bruised his shoulder in Saturday's win over the Giants. Despite a poor outing on Saturday, Geno Smith (three picks and a safety) has emerged as the frontrunner in the Jets starting quarterback battle.
Wow, that was some game. The Jets walk away with a 24-21 victory in OT, and the 'Snoopy Trophy,' but prehaps are really the losers in the end. Loss is the key theme from last night's MetLife Bowl III.
Geno is human, not the super-being we hoped for.
In his first start this preseason, Geno Smith looked just as a rookie should, in his play. 3 INTs—two of which...
I used to think that the 2012 New York Jets season was a gift from the comedy gods that would never be replicated. Then last night happened.
The Jets took the field for their "dress rehearsal" third preseason game last night, taking on that other team from New York (you know, the one that actually wins things). After missing their last game with an ankle injury, rookie...
This is third preseason game and this is where the starters play the entire first half. This should make the fans of the New York Jets shudder. Here are five things learned from this preseason game.So this is what "brutal" looks like:Geno Smith started the game and played three quarters. The first half we got a glimpse of what brutal looks like. Smith ended the game...
