TEAMS: New York Giants
It appears that the 2012 season for potential New York Giants starting cornerback Terrell Thomas may be in serious doubt as he has suffered an injury to his already surgically repaired right knee.Thomas’ cause of the injury appeared to happen after he slipped on the practice field covering receiver Dominik Hixon during a drill on Sunday.
Thomas was sent to the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York Monday after reporting that he had some initial swelling in his right knee. An MRI and an examination by Dr. Russell Warren later showed that the five-year veteran suffered yet another injury to his knee that included some ACL damage. This is the third time that Thomas has injured his ACL, and the second time he has injured the same ACL in the past two seasons.
Thomas and everyone on the Giants hoped his knee problems were history. The five-year veteran missed the entire 2011 season after tearing his right ACL in a preseason victory over Chicago on August 22 – the same injury he suffered at the University of Southern California in 2005. Dr. Ting repaired the ligament a month later in San Francisco.Thomas worked non-stop for almost a year so he would be ready for training camp at the University at Albany and the upcoming season. He said his knee felt good and after missing the first practice with a stiff back, moved right into the lineup as the starter at right corner.
With Thomas out of the picture for an undisclosed amount of time, the New York Giants must take a look at the depth chart and weigh their options. Right now there are two possibilities when it comes to replacing Thomas. One of them is Michael Coe, and the other is most likely 2011 first-round draft pick Prince Amukamara. Either way the loss of Terrell Thomas is a big blow to this defense especially since the giants have got bit by the injury bug a few times already this preseason.
Others injured for the Giants in camp are Defensive end Justin Trattou who has injured his ankle. Also Giants rookie cornerback Jayron Hosley went down today due to lacerating his eye which required stitches. Linebacker Michael Boley also traveled to a New York Hospital to get his hamstring checked out. Finally outside linebacker Keith Rivers also sat out practice for a second straight day in a row due to a hamstring injury as well.
Clearly this is NOT how coach Tom Coughlin and the rest of the World Champion Giants wanted to start their summer camp this season.
