Giants-Eagles scoreless after 1st quarter

Associated Press  |  Last updated September 30, 2012
Defense dominated early and the New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles were scoreless after the first quarter on Sunday night. Eli Manning completed just 4 of 11 passes for 35 yards. Michael Vick had a better start, going 5 for 9 for 72 yards. The defending Super Bowl champion Giants (2-1) have struggled against the Eagles (2-1) in this NFC East rivalry, losing seven of the last eight meetings. Hoping to establish the run, the Eagles had no success giving the ball to All-Pro LeSean McCoy. He had three carries for 4 yards. A penalty cost the Giants an opportunity inside the red zone. Left tackle Will Beatty, starting because David Diehl is injured, was called for holding to negate a 38-yard catch by Martellus Bennett to the Eagles 11. Vick connected with DeSean Jackson for 32 yards on third-and-11 to get Philadelphia's only first down in the first two possessions. Jackson made an 11-yard catch on the next drive, getting the call after a review overturned an incompletion. Vick then hit Brent Celek for 17 yards on third-and-2 to get the Eagles past midfield for the first time as they went into the second quarter. The Giants were coming off a convincing 36-7 win at Carolina 10 days ago. The Eagles lost 26-7 at Arizona last week. Already missing two starters (Diehl and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks), the Giants lost safety Kenny Phillips in the middle of the quarter with a knee sprain. His return was questionable. Before the game, the Eagles retired the No. 20 worn by Brian Dawkins for 13 seasons from 1996-2008. The hard-hitting safety went to eight Pro Bowls and was a four-time All-Pro in 16 years with Philadelphia and Denver. Dawkins, one of the most revered athletes to play in this sports-crazed city, sent the sellout crowd at the Linc into a frenzy when he ran out of the tunnel during pregame introductions. Wearing his green No. 20 Eagles jersey, Dawkins did his unique, crawling, gyrating entrance. He then joined the captains at midfield for the coin toss. --- Online: http://pro32.ap.org/poll and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL
