The New York Giants will be without one of their main offensive threats for the second straight game as wide receiver, Hakeem Nicks was ruled out this afternoon with a nagging knee injury. For the second straight week the Giants waited until the day before a game to rule out Nicks.
The Giants were hopeful that Nicks would be able to play after having nearly two weeks to rest. He has not played since Sept. 16 against Tampa Bay. Nicks went down hard on a play during that win over Tampa and had not really tested his knee since he has been practicing only once a week to rest his foot, which he had surgery on in late May to repair a broken bone. The Giants determined there was an issue with Nicks’ knee after the receiver went through a limited practice Thursday. He was listed as doubtful on Friday before being downgraded to out on Saturday.
Although he had adequate rest for his foot, it was unexpected knee swelling that will cause Nicks to miss his second consecutive game. In his absence, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is forced yet again to shuffle the depth chart which has seemed to be an ongoing occurance. It is likely that Domenik Hixon, who is returning from a concussion, will take over Nicks’ spot with Ramses Barden again finding himself bumped up the depth chart due to injury. Barden started against Carolina with Nicks out and shined with a career-high nine receptions for 138 yards.
This decision to rule out Nicks for Sunday’s game versus the Eagles now makes a total of four players that are ruled out for the game. Tackle David Diehl(knee), cornerback Jayron Hosley (hamstring) and linebacker Keith Rivers (hamstring) were all declared out on Friday. The Giants also have a few players listed as questionable for the game as Safety Antrel Rolle (knee) and cornerback Michael Coe (hamstring) are still suffering effects of their injuries. However, Rolle made the trip down to Philidelphia and will possibly be a game-time decision to see how his knee feels before the game.
